Split a Recording into Notes

Divide a finished recording at transcript lines and create separate notes with their own audio and summaries.

Last updated: October 24, 2026

Use Split Recording… when one recording contains several meetings or topics that belong in separate notes. Each resulting note has its own transcript, media, and regenerated summary.

Choose where to split

  1. Wait for transcription and processing to finish. The note needs at least two transcript segments.
  2. Right-click the note and choose Split Recording…. Alternatively, right-click a transcript block and choose Split Recording Here… to preselect that location.
  3. In the sheet, click each transcript line that should start a new note. Click a selected line again to remove that split point.
  4. Review the time ranges beside Creates … notes.
  5. Click Split into … Notes.

Cuts occur at transcript line starts. You cannot choose the first line as a split point or create a part with no transcript. If overlapping microphone and system-audio speech crosses a cut, adjacent notes may share a short stretch of audio so that complete transcript segments keep their audio.

Summit opens the first resulting note and queues new summaries for the parts. It reuses the existing transcript rather than transcribing every part again.

What each note keeps

ContentAfter splitting
Microphone, system audio, and screen videoTrimmed copies for each part
Transcript, bookmarks, timed screenshotsAssigned to the relevant part, with times starting from that part’s beginning
Speaker identitiesIncluded in the parts where those speakers appear
Tags, folder, template, languageCopied to every part
Typed notes and untimed attachmentsKept in the first part
Calendar linksAssigned to the part where the event starts
Summary, insights, action itemsRegenerated for each part
Chat sessions and summary historyStay with the original note

The parts are independent notes. You can move or tag them, export them, or sync them through iCloud.

Restore the original

After a successful split, the original moves to Recently Deleted. You can restore it there for 30 days, including the chat sessions and summary history that remain attached to it. Restoring the original does not remove the new notes.

Splitting creates additional notes and must fit within your plan’s remaining allowance. If Summit reports that the recording’s storage folder is unavailable, reconnect it before splitting. A failed media cut or save leaves the original in place.
