Screenshots and Screen Video

Attach timed screenshots or record screen video, and control screen capture during protected meetings.

Use screenshots to preserve a slide or diagram at a specific moment in a recording. For a continuous visual record, enable screen video. These features need macOS Screen Recording permission; ordinary microphone and system audio recording do not.

Capture a screenshot during recording

  1. Start a recording.
  2. Click the screenshot button in the recording controls.
  3. Summit attaches the image to the note and adds a bookmark at the current recording time.

The arrow beside the screenshot button opens its options:

  • Full Screen clears the selected area so the next screenshot captures the active screen. Click the screenshot button to take it.
  • Select Area… lets you choose a region and capture it.
  • Selected Area repeats a capture of that region; Change Selected Area… replaces it.

Summit remembers a valid selected area between captures and app launches. Choose Full Screen to clear it. An area that no longer fits your display arrangement is discarded.

Record screen video

  1. Open Settings → Recording → Screen Video.
  2. Enable Record screen video and Allow screen capture while recording.
  3. Start a new recording and grant Screen Recording access if requested.
  4. Stop the recording when finished. Open the note to play the screen video with its audio tracks.

Screen video captures a display, rather than just the screenshot area you selected. The screenshot area does not crop the video. Video can produce large files, so use it when the moving image adds useful context.

Transcription uses the audio tracks. Screen video is not required for transcription or summaries.

Turn screen capture off during a meeting

Some meeting apps hide participants’ video or shared content when another app captures the screen. This can happen with screen capture protection in Zoom.

Open the screenshot button’s arrow menu and choose Turn Off Screen Capture. This stops screen video capture and disables screenshots while audio continues recording. The same switch is available as Allow screen capture while recording in Recording settings.

To resume, choose Turn On Screen Capture, or click the disabled capture button. Enabling capture does not itself take a screenshot; click again when you want the image.

If you are recording screen video, periods with screen capture switched off appear as black video while the audio timeline continues.

Remove video while keeping audio

In a note with screen video, click Delete video below the player and confirm. The microphone and system audio remain available for playback and transcription. The note returns to its audio player.
